About the Item

This exceptional desk lamp—unofficially dubbed the Tiburón (Spanish for "shark")—was designed by Luis Pérez de la Oliva for Grin Luz in the 1960s and stands among the most coveted pieces in the Spanish mid-century lighting canon. Though never officially named, this model is highly recognizable by its dramatic, fin-like arm structure that has inspired collectors and authors alike to give it its current nickname. Crafted in Spain, the Tiburón is a masterclass in form and material. Its solid wood base rises into a chrome structural arc that curves fluidly into the tiltable saucer-shaped shade, creating a dynamic and sculptural silhouette. The shade, rendered entirely in chromed metal, contains a frosted glass diffuser beneath which sit two E27 sockets, providing soft, even illumination—ideal for workspaces or ambient reading light. Its base rotates on a ball-bearing mechanism for directional flexibility, while the wood-chrome contrast and gentle UFO shape echo the celebrated Fase aesthetic of the same period. This version, fully chromed, is particularly rare and desirable—as highlighted in Fase: The Book – Mystery Solved (2018), where authors Óscar Jiménez Serrano and Juan Luis Gómez Frieiro describe it as their favorite Grin Luz design, even housing it in their personal collections. A rare and refined example of Spanish modernist lighting, the Tiburón desk lamp is both a sculptural statement and a functional lighting object—timeless, elegant, and increasingly hard to find.
