Murano glass chandelier from the 70s of the 900s. Measures H 46cm and D 34cm. The fascinating history of Murano Glass was born in 1291, when it was decided that the glassworks of Venice were transferred to Murano. This decision, which soon proved important for the inhabitants of the island of Murano, was taken because the furnaces of the laboratories in Venice were the main cause of serious fires. Concentrating all the glassworks in Murano was useful in Venice to control the activity of the master glasssmiths and to preserve that art that had made her famous all over the world. Jealous of the fame acquired, Venice forced the master glassware to live on the island and prevented them from leaving it without a special permit. Despite these restrictions, however, many glassinists managed to escape, bringing with them an important bag of experience and craftsmanship knowledge and exporting their famous techniques abroad. The most significant crisis that Murano Glass had to face was in the fifteenth century, when the manufacture of Bohemian crystals began. Venice managed to get out of it, thanks also to the use of Murano glass for the realisation of chandeliers, still today among the best known and appreciated works in Murano glass. In 1602, the podestà, in censusing the islanders, resorted to the compilation of a Golden Book. The process of obtaining registration was long and took place only with the consent of the Republic. Those who were not inscribed in the Book could not work in glassware, did not participate in councils and did not enjoy the privileges granted to the citizens of Murano. In 1900, the master glasssmiths managed to follow modern artistic trends and fashions, focussing on a perfected Murano glass processing, while respecting the millennial tradition, which enhances Murano glass works in a unique and inimitable way.
