About the Item
opaline murano glass lamp from the 80s by the master glassmakers of murano. Product in good condition with small wear caused by the years and use. Venetian glass art has very ancient roots and harks back to Roman and Byzantine knowledge. When it developed it was based in Venice, but for fear of fires, it was later decided that the glass artisans moved to the island of Murano, and their workshops were concentrated in particular along the famous Rio dei Vetrai.
It is interesting that unlike other areas where glass processing spread and that is near the raw materials, Venice and Murano used materials that they imported from distant places. However, this is a structural problem for the entire island: getting the raw materials there!
To understand the importance of glass production in Venice, just think that the master glassmakers enjoyed a certain prestige even in society: they were registered in the golden book of Venetian patrician families and their daughters could marry the noble offspring. It is also thanks to the master glassmakers of Murano that we owe the creation of crystal in 1450: a refined and valuable quality of glass that, synonymous with elegance, became much sought after in the courts. The refined productions of Murano were known worldwide and, in the 16th century, a period of decline of the Serenissima, were widely requested by the courts of the nobles of the Baroque period, who particularly appreciated the variety of lattimi: a peculiar milky white glass that, due to its color, went well with the furniture of the time. Today, the Murano glassworks, despite maintaining its traditions intact, probably represents one of the Italian artisan realities most linked to design, made in Italy and contemporary art.

Murano glass pendant lamp by Carlo Nason, 60s
By Carlo Nason
Located in Catania, IT
Mid-Century Shamrock Murano pendant. Model Cascata byy Carlo Nason for Mazzega, Italy 1960s Rare green color. For the Cascata (Italian for “waterfall”), which debuted in the 1960s, Nason achieved the effect of cascading water through an inverted pyramid of hanging glass plates, each individually mouth-blown and suspended from a chrome-plated frame for a dazzling, Art Deco–styled display. Lit from behind, the plates have a glittering, iridescent quality. Versions of the lamp range from 30 inches to over six feet in height, with large models featuring more than 20 individual light sockets.
Nason, who continues to live and work in Murano today, would go on to produce artful lighting for Mazzega until at least 1980. While Mazzega 1946 offers contemporary editions of Nason’s design — now called “Water Fall” — vintage examples of the Cascata chandelier...
