About the Item
An exquisite pair of antique French Hollywood Regency gilt and lapis blue églomisé glass lamps. Each lamp is composed of a tall cylindrical body that narrows into a slender stem and rests on a shaped base enriched with applied gilt bronze ornament. The glass surface is decorated with églomisé panels featuring a deep lapis blue ground, inset with white neoclassical figures placed within octagonal cartouches. These figures are shown in draped attire, holding attributes such as a flower or staff, bordered by precise linear frames. Additional elongated oval medallions encircle the bodies, each filled with white linear decoration against the blue ground, creating a continuous decorative scheme. Each lamp retains a domed gilt bronze cover with a foliate finial, emphasizing the vertical outline of the form.
The bases are structured as octagonal plinths, mounted with gilt bronze plaques decorated with rosettes and floral motifs. A band of fluted ornament in gilt provides a transition between the plinth and the stems. The stems themselves are ornamented with lapis blue églomisé medallions, each enclosing stylized motifs such as classical lyres, maintaining consistency with the design of the larger panels above. This balanced arrangement connects the foot of the lamp to the decorated body, reinforcing the sense of order within the composition.
The églomisé technique, employing reverse painting and gilding on glass, allows for the contrast of gilt ground with lapis blue and white figural decoration. The neoclassical motifs, paired with the rich gilding and elongated structure, reflect the decorative style favored in the Hollywood Regency period, where French neoclassical elements were reinterpreted for dramatic interior presentation.
