About the Item
An elegant pair of antique French Louis XVI style porcelain vases/lamps, each of ovoid form rising from a square stepped base with a flared pedestal foot. The bodies are painted with scattered floral sprays in polychrome enamels, framed by gilt foliate borders beneath the neck and foot. The shoulders are mounted with large, scrolled handles in high relief, painted in tones of rose, green, and white with gilt highlights. The removable covers continue the floral decoration and are topped with gilt finials.
The front of each vase is centered with a painted coat of arms featuring a leaping stag within a gilt shield, flanked by acanthus mantling in iron-red and blue enamels, and surmounted by a crest with a rearing stag. Above, an additional reserve within a gilt and puce frame depicts a stag in profile, further reinforcing the heraldic theme. The reverse sides of the vases are painted with scattered flowers within the same gilt foliate band.
These vases reflect the French porcelain tradition of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when heraldic devices were often commissioned for prominent families. The combination of polychrome floral decoration, gilt ornament, and heraldic imagery aligns with the neoclassical taste of the Louis XVI period. The square bases are mounted with gilt wood, complementing the overall design and providing stability to the tall, slender forms.
