About the Item

Pair of Area Table Lamps by Mario Bellini for Artemide, Italy, 1980s The Area 50 table lamps are part of a broader lighting series—comprising table, floor, wall, and ceiling fixtures—designed by Mario Bellini in 1974 for Artemide. The lamps have an E27 socket, which is compatible with the American E26 standard. Upon request, we can provide the LED bulb with a chrome top, as shown in the images. Bellini's intention was not merely to fashion an object; instead, he aimed to distill these lamps into a synthesis of gesture and effect, aligning them with the intangible nature of light. This involved the gesture of twisting a translucent foil to guide and disperse the light, coupled with the effect created by the seemingly impossible alignment of the 48cm square foil and the five bulges that distort it. Reflecting on the design, Bellini explained:
"The intangible nature of light led me, in a later lamp, to move away from attachment to form and object, reducing the lamp to a synthesis of effect and gesture. The gesture: twisting a translucent foil just enough to direct and diffuse the right amount of light. The effect: the striking, almost impossible combination of a square foil subtly deformed by five bulges, evoking the unpredictability of the sky and its clouds." — Mario Bellini
