About the Item

A striking and finely crafted pair of Chinese red cinnabar and gilt bronze mounted lamps. Each lamp is raised on a circular gilt bronze base with a domed profile and rich muted gold patina, supporting a baluster-shaped body composed of intricately carved cinnabar lacquer. The vibrant red lacquer is built up through numerous applications of cinnabar paste and carved in deep relief once hardened. The bodies are adorned with richly detailed continuous scenes depicting robed scholars in tranquil garden landscapes with pine trees and rock formations, alternating with elegant floral cartouches of blooming peonies and orchids. The high-relief carving is framed within recessed panels, elegantly following the curvature of the form and contributing to a refined sense of balance. Decorative bands of lotus petals, stylized fretwork, and scrolling foliage accentuate the neck, shoulder, and base, enhancing the vertical symmetry and traditional aesthetic. The gilt bronze mounts include molded foot rings and upper collars, fitted with later electrical components. The combination of exquisite craftsmanship, traditional Chinese artistry, and Western adaptation makes this pair a rare and captivating addition to any fine decorative arts collection.
