About the Item

Graduated pair of blue-and-white 1977 Dutch Flora Gouda ceramic lamps with new Liberty floral shades; rewired w/ US plugs. 50cm/19.7in 43cm/16.9in. Heights include lampshades. This graduated pair of Dutch ceramic table lamps is composed from two original Flora Gouda vases from the Lotus series, produced in 1977 during the final years of the factory’s hand-decorated output. The lamps differ slightly in scale—measuring 50 cm (19.7 in) and 43 cm (16.9 in) tall—creating a balanced, intentional pairing that feels collected rather than strictly matched. Each base is finished in a soft, matte cornflower-blue glaze. Encircling the upper body of each vase is a hand-painted white abstract frieze, applied freehand. The motif is rhythmic and graphic, lending the lamps a distinctly modern character while retaining the warmth and subtle variation of handwork. Both lamps are topped with newly made bespoke shades in Liberty London’s “Marquess Garden” floral fabric, printed on cotton sateen. The dense, small-scale floral pattern introduces softness and visual complexity, acting as a counterpoint to the clean geometry of the ceramic bases. The palette—layered blues with crisp white—was chosen specifically to echo the cornflower-blue glaze while adding texture and depth. Though the shades match, the graduated bases give the pair a relaxed, thoughtful presence rather than strict symmetry. Custom brass collars and fittings provide a refined transition between base and shade, while fabric-wrapped navy cords complete the composition. Each lamp has been newly wired and fitted with U.S. plugs, ready for immediate use. The original vases were converted using non-invasive methods, preserving their integrity as collectible ceramic objects. ⸻ About Flora Gouda Founded in 1945 in Gouda, the Netherlands, Flora was one of the country’s most progressive ceramic manufacturers in the postwar period. Known for expressive glazes and hand-painted decoration, the factory maintained artisanal production methods well into the 1970s. The Lotus series, introduced briefly in 1977, represents one of Flora’s final hand-decorated lines before broader industrial changes. Today, Lotus pieces are valued for their balance of modernist design and traditional craftsmanship. ⸻ About Amitābha Studio Amitābha Studio is a design atelier dedicated to transforming historic ceramics into one-of-a-kind lighting objects. Each lamp is crafted with deep respect for the original form, using non-invasive methods that preserve the integrity of every vintage or antique vessel. Bases are paired with bespoke lampshades and finished with carefully selected fittings, cords, and custom brass elements, guided by a commitment to sustainability, cultural continuity, and timeless design.
