About the Item

RARE pair of Etruscan style art table lamps, Urn form with Greek Motifs of warriors, horses, chariots with floral and geometric details. Possibly a recreation of a Greek Wedding theme vessel. The uniqueness of these lamps, is the Intricate Gold Detail seen throughout these hand-painted lamps. Retail UL listed labels. Possibly Italian. Shade 14" x 14" for reference. Ancient Greek wedding vases, primarily known as a lebes gamikos (plural: lebetes gamikoi), were distinctive vessels used specifically in marriage ceremonies. They were typically given as gifts to the bride and groom and often featured intricate painted scenes related to the wedding. The primary function of the lebes gamikos was to hold the sacred water used for the bride's prenuptial (pre-wedding) cleansing bath. The fetching of this water, often from a specific, ritually significant location, was a key part of the marriage rites. Another important type of vessel was the loutrophoros, a tall, slender vase with a long neck, which was also used for carrying bath water for the bride or groom. Loutrophoroi were also placed on the graves of those who died before they could be married.
