About the Item

A striking and most impressive pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. patinated bronze, ormolu, and Rouge Griotte marble lamps in the manner of Clodion. Each lamp is raised by a square Rouge Griotte marble base with ball feet, impressive rosettes, and a fine mottled border. The socle shaped pedestal support displays a richly chased wrap around berried laurel band with a beautiful spiral fluted design below the baluster shaped body. The body displays wonderful designs of a beautiful maiden bathing Bacchus, the God of wine, on one side and a Cherub and Bacchus tying a wreath in the maiden's hair on the other. At each side are remarkable ormolu mounts of handsome bearded men amidst richly chased wings and impressive horns in a striking satin and burnished finish. Above is the elegantly curved fluted neck with a beautiful wrap around Les Oves band and a lovely foliate top cap. Claude Michel, aka Clodion (1738 – 1814) A renowned French Master sculptor born in Nancy, France. In 1755, Clodion went to Paris and was a pupil of J. B. Pigalle. In 1759 he obtained the grand prize for sculpture at the Académie Royale and in 1762 he went to Rome. His works were frequently exhibited at the Salon. Clodion's renowned works are displayed all over the world.
