About the Item

An attractive and most elegant pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. Onyx and Ormolu lamps. Each truly stunning lamp is raised by a mottled and stepped Onyx base with a pierced berried floral front reserve and supported on a thick Ormolu plate with scrolling foliate decorations on the three front panels. Both the Onyx base and the Ormolu plate are wrapped in beaded Ormolu bands. The mottled Onyx base is decorated by a pierced Ormolu floral badge on the front side. Atop the Onyx base is an Ormolu socle shaped support with fluted designs that presents the urn shaped Onyx body above. The Onyx body has a wrap around acanthus leaf band at its base. The upper section of the urn shaped body contains oval plaques depicting a female and winged cherub playing joyously. The plaques located on either side are decorated with flowing bowed ribbons above and have swaging floral garlands that connect to the fluted square handles on either side. The handles with their scrolled ends and acanthus leaf decorations attach to the stunning top cap. The socle shaped Ormolu top has fluted designs with a band reserve and dentil patterns atop.
