About the Item
A spectacular and large pair of French antique Louis XVI-style crystal candelabras, attributed to Baccarat. The pair is crafted from cut and engraved crystal, designed in the Louis XVI style with tall, tapering stems that support multiple candle arms. Each candelabra features a central shaft rising from a wide circular base, faceted and engraved with gilt floral bands. The base is structured with a stepped outline, the lowest tier decorated with octagonal gilt panels, and the upper section enriched with a continuous border of engraved flowers. The shaft is fluted and ringed with additional gilt floral decoration, supporting a large glass receiver issuing scrolling candle arms.
Each candelabra supports a total of six arms surrounding the central stem, with one additional candle holder above. The nozzles and drip pans are of cut crystal, decorated with floral gilt bands, and are hung with faceted crystal drops in graduated strands. The drops include spherical and hexagonal faceted forms, arranged in cascades around each arm. The upper stem extends above the arms to support additional strings of crystal prisms, thereby completing the structure.
The overall design, material, and execution are consistent with the work of Baccarat during the 19th century, known for its production of monumental crystal lighting in the Louis XVI style. Baccarat frequently employed gilt-engraved crystal, faceted drops, and floral gilt decoration in its candelabras and chandeliers. Pieces of this type were often commissioned for presentation or used in grand interiors, aligning with Baccarat’s production for both private and royal patrons.
