About the Item

A superb and decorative pair of French 19th century Louis XVI style Gilt Bronze Mounted Sarrancolin Marbleurn-form lamps, crafted from richly veined Sarrancolin marble and mounted with finely cast doré bronze in the neoclassical manner. Each baluster-shaped body displays the distinct mauve, cream, and soft white coloration characteristic of Sarrancolin marble sourced from the Hautes-Pyrénées region of France. The urns are adorned with exceptional gilt bronze mounts, including graceful foliate scroll handles and elegantly draped floral garlands suspended from tied ribbon bows. The central field of each urn is beautifully embellished with gilt bronze laurel swags and finely detailed flowerheads, symmetrically arranged across the surface. Scrolling upright handles are modeled as acanthus-wrapped branches that curl gently at the shoulders, while acanthus collars encircle both the lower body and the foot, flowing seamlessly into the spreading socle and square plinth base. The domed marble lids, now mounted as part of the lamp fittings, are crowned with gilt bronze collars finely incised with laurel wreath motifs. The use of Sarrancolin marble paired with high-quality gilt bronze ornamentation reflects the refined decorative arts of late 19th century France, when classical revival designs were at the height of fashion. These lamps were originally conceived as garniture vases, the pair has been sensitively converted to lamps, retaining their stately presence and rich ornamental character.
