About the Item
This elegant pair of lamps, attributed to Philippe Barbier / Maison Barbier, are made of chromed steel with bases in tawny/tortoiseshell-colored Bakelite or resin (one base cracked).
Master craftsman Philippe Barbier (1927-2020) created table lamps used on the sets of many French films, as well as furniture and decor such as coffee tables and candlesticks. The furniture designer and producer worked in Paris in the 1960s and 1970s.
He was known for using steel to make his pieces shine. Barbier operated a small studio called Maison Barbier in central Paris on the Rue du Pré aux Clercs. In addition to making his own furniture, he sold the work of other designers.
Notably, Maison Barbier was the first to distribute the iconic 1968 Tam-Tam stool by French designer Henry Massonnet. Barbier also had a hand in designing the stool, which is still in production today.
Barbier lamps were very popular for their unique designs, which often featured elegant curves and bases made of stone or polished metal. Their striking shapes attracted the attention of many directors.
Films in which Barbier lamps appeared include Le Retour du Grand Blond (1974), Peur Sur La Ville (1975), Nous Irons Tous Au Paradis (1977), Le Mac (2010) and Dans La Maison (2012).
The lamps are equipped with their original lampshades (some marks on the lampshades). Electrification verified.
Total height: 43cm including 22.5cm for the lampshades.

Gaetano Sciolari (1927 – 1994) is a designer, architect and above all an outstanding businessman, born in Italy in 1927. After graduating from the Faculty of Architecture, the young man returned to his first passion, cinema, and in particular filmmaking.
However, after the death of his father in 1949, Sciolari had no choice but to take over the family lighting production business. In just a few years, the designer transformed the company and propelled it onto the international scene.
Sciolari was not only a brilliant business leader, he was also a creative, prolific and talented designer. He worked for the great names of design like Stilnovo in Italy in the 1950s, Boulanger and Stilkronen.
Throughout his career, he designed beautiful and incredible lighting fixtures like the “Mod A5011” pendant (circa 1950), the “4079” floor lamp (1965) and of course the Cubic chandelier (1970s).
His creations are shaped in both shiny and matte metal, multi-lights, evoking futuristic visions of the emerging space age. In the 70s and 80s, his creations are in high demand.
