About the Item

Pair of Modeline 635 model designed by Arthur Jacobs. The original advertisement describes these lamps as having a Japanese influence. One can see the similarities of Jacobs design with common Japanese aesthetics. His cylinder shape with sheer white shade seems to borrow from Japanese rice paper veiled lanterns. The flares at the top of the lamps spires resemble the pointed tips of Japanese roofs. Modeline has succeeded in interpreting Eastern elements into a Modern, Western sensibility. The results are stunning, beautifully sculpted walnut wood encasing an ethereal cream colored shade, trimmed in gold. The lamps exude a peaceful ambiance through the warmth of the light and materials, along with a perfectly harmonious design. These particular lamps are in remarkably fine condition! We seldom find these lamps with shades in such great condition. The walnut wood and metallic surfaces are tip-top. We would rate these as time capsule condition. The design is a masterful synthesis of Japanese aesthetics interpreted through a mid-century Western lens. The sculptured walnut encasements form soft cylinders that cradle ethereal cream-colored shades, crowned by subtle flared tops that echo Asian rooflines. Gilded trim accents enhance the sense of refinement, catching ambient light and drawing the eye to details of finish and form. The materials shine: rich walnut with a deep, tactile grain, and metallic surfaces that retain their original luster, showing only the most delicate signs of age—fine handling marks, minimal patina—that convey authenticity rather than wear. The shades are in outstanding original condition, rare in pieces of this age; the glow through them still softens direct light with calm, enveloping warmth. These lamps do more than illuminate—they create atmosphere. The visual balance of cylinder and flare, wood and cream silk-like shade, solid form and translucent light combines to evoke a peaceful ambiance.
