About the Item
The unique and elegant pair of antique French lamps is formed from black glass bodies mounted as table lamps in the Louis XVI style. Each lamp features a baluster-shaped glass vessel rising from a stepped circular base with molded edges. The glass sections are elongated and tapering, surmounted by rounded shoulders, narrow necks, and flaring rims. The bases and shoulders are accented with applied linear ornamentation in enamel, including dotted and scalloped borders. The design maintains symmetry between both lamps, with identical proportions and structural elements.
The black glass is decorated in white enamel with finely painted motifs. One side of each lamp depicts a large heron standing in a marsh setting, surrounded by foliage, reeds, and flowering plants. Details such as plumage, wings, and vegetation are rendered with precision, creating strong contrast against the dark background. The reverse of the vases displays smaller floral compositions, consisting of leaves and blossoms arranged in stylized groupings. Additional enamel decoration is applied to the rims and shoulders, where alternating white and black sections form a repeating vertical pattern.
These lamps are executed in the manner of Baccarat, the French glass manufacturer known for producing richly decorated black and opaque glassware during the 19th century. The use of white enamel painting on a black ground, along with baluster-shaped vessels adapted into electrified lamps, is consistent with Baccarat’s decorative output in the Louis XVI revival style. The materials and decorative techniques reflect the workshop’s emphasis on enamel-painted decoration combined with elegant forms intended for domestic interiors.
