Art Deco Paperweight by Paul Kiss
By Paul Kiss
Located in NANTES, FR
Art Deco paperweight circa 1925. Wrought iron squirrel stamped P. Kiss. In perfect condition. Height: 16.5 cm Width: 8 cm Length: 12.5 cm Weight: 1.8 kg Paul Kiss, born on March 5, 1886 in Kézdiszentkereszt (hu) (then in Hungary, now Poian in Romania) in the Carpathian Mountains and died in 1962 in Linières-Bouton, France, was an artistic ironworker. He exhibited at major French art events of the 1920s. Paul Kiss helped elevate metalworking to an art form in the 1920s and 1930s, creating magnificent furniture, table lamps, and wall mirrors with exquisite ornamental details, inspired by Art Deco. The pieces often featured geometric patterns, plant motifs, and human and animal figures. Kiss was born in Hungary in 1885 but moved to Paris in 1907. There, he worked under Raymond Subes and Edgar Brandt, two of the most famous metalworkers of the time. After the First World War, Kiss opened his own studio and showroom on Rue Léon-Delhomme. Kiss designed and produced numerous pieces of iron furniture throughout the 1920s and 1930s. He was commissioned to restore historic monuments and create new public monuments. His clients included the kings of Siam and Egypt. Kiss created the metalwork for the war memorial in Levallois-Perret, France, for which he received the silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1924. In 1925, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. In the 1920s, Kiss mentored the young designer Paul Fehér...

Jean Noverdy, master glassmaker who mainly produced chandeliers, table lamps in the Art Nouveau style sometimes with bronze frames, a few vases and Art Deco wall sconces in the 1925s in Dijon. In the 1920s, Jean Noverdy created lamps with shades most often in glass with two layers between which he sprayed colored enamels to give a marmoreal look. Vases and molded glass shades are also part of his production. The same techniques used by Daum Frères, André Delatte and Muller Frères in this period. He also created vases and etched acid tones in the style of the Nancy school. Between 1926 and 1928, he was present at the Salon of the Society of French Artists in Paris. It produced under the corporate name: Etablissements Jean Noverdy. His workshops were located at 17 Place Bossuet, Dijon. He was a pupil of Henri Dubret...

Pair of Art Deco Bookends Signed P Kiss
By Paul Kiss
Located in NANTES, FR
Pair of bookends circa 1930. Wrought iron squirrels stamped P. Kiss for Paul Kiss. In perfect condition. Total height: 17.5 cm Width: 14.2 cm Depth: 7.5 cm Total weight: 5.8 kg A French master ironworker, Paul Kiss was born in 1885 in Belafalva, Romania, and trained in Central and Western Europe before settling in Paris. He gained recognition and awards in the mid-1920s, when he gained recognition for his Art Nouveau and Art Deco-inspired creations with the arrival of Cubism and its clean lines. This is evidenced by an article by critic George Denoinville on the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts, and more specifically on Paul Kiss, whose contribution to interior and exterior furniture he celebrated through decorative objects such as console tables, doors, and radiator covers. According to him, Paul Kiss… "Master Ironworker works tirelessly towards this goal… What stood out above all was this interior partition door, so simple, rich in patterns and frames, that it appeared to us like a veritable metallic lacework. …Paul Kiss is, without a doubt, one of our most original artistic ironworkers…" Excerpts from "Mobilier et Décoration, December 1925," pp. 21-27. Kiss created the metalwork for the Monuments aux Morts war memorial in Levallois-Perret, France, for which he received the silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1924. In 1925, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. In the 1920s, Kiss mentored the young designer Paul Fehér...
