About the Item
Called a "lampe bouillotte" in French, this late eighteenth century Louis XVI period lamp was originally used for the card game of the same name, la bouillotte, which became popular in France at the end of the eighteenth century during the reign of Louis XVI. This copper and bronze repousse lamp for two candles is detailed with a fascia motif and hanging garlands on the candle holders. A floral finial crowns the top of the central iron pillar. Used to light the table when playing cards, both the shade and the candleholder tray may be raised and lowered as candles burn down to allow for prolonged lighting. A rare find, circa 1780.
