The lamp was created by Richard Barr as a part of the Studio Collection for Laurel Lamp Company; the design is called Assemblage, and the lamp is listed as #H-734 Original Sculpture lamp in Laurel catalogue. It is one of Barr’s most iconic and recognizable designs from his Studio Collection. The sculpture was realized in various metals, including bronze and iron.
Richard Barr (1930 - 2003) was an American sculptor and artist. Barr graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 1951 with BA in Industrial Design, and began designing for Westinghouse Electric where he worked on television cabinets. In the late 1950s/early 1960s Barr was working for J. Gordon Perlmuter
Associates in nearby Plainfield, New Jersey, becoming the head of the Industrial Design Division in 1961.
In the early 1960s the Laurel Lamp Company began working with J. Gordon Perlmutter, where Barr was introduced to Laurel co-founder Harold Weiss. From the mid 1960s to the late 1970s Barr was involved in the design of many Laurel Lamp Company pieces and had several of his own lighting collections for Laurel. The first confirmed Laurel Lamp Company designs by Richard Barr are from a 1964 article in Arts
Architecture Magazine; the same year, Barr designed a series of “ac’cent” lamps that ultimately became Laurel’s legacy. From 1964 to late 1970s, Barr continued to design for Laurel in various capacities, and is credited as a primary Laurel designer during this time period. Additionally, Barr worked independently for other furniture and homeware companies throughout his career, including Thomasville Furniture, Whitney Brothers, Ethan Allen, and the Haeger Lamp Company.

His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
