Russel Wright Style! RARE MARVELOUS! EARLY MID CENTURY/ DECO STYLE! ALUMINUM REFLECTOR SHADE AND CONE DESK/TABLE LAMP! (APPROX. 18" TALL By 16" WIDE ) Here is a rare, large and superb aluminum desk/table lamp with a cone and reflector design. It is a great example of the transition of Art Deco and Bauhaus designs to Mid Century Modern. The New York World's Fair brought new emphasis on interior decoration and style. Designers like Russel Wright were working to make modern living more informal and this required a whole new outlook on how many furnishing were designed and of what materials they were made. Plastic for dinnerware and aluminum for machines became a the materials of choice for modern furnishings. Aluminum was light weight and didn't rust. Plastic was far more resistant to breakage. This period saw the shift in formal interior decoration to a new modern style that could encompass a broader spectrum of the social classes. This reflector lamp is the epitome of modern illumination thought circa 1945-1955! Designers were experimenting with ways to create *indirect lighting* because studies illustrated this was better for the eyes. The MOMA Lighting Design competition of 1951 would almost exclusively showcase designs that were based on reflection technology. Here we see aluminum used on the base, the cone lamp and the reflector dish. Steel was used for the arm supporting the dish for additional strength. The shade has small perforations to permit light to come through for visual interest. The large shade is very effective at reflecting light to a work surface! It's a very rare design and we have not come across any others. No makers markings or labels of any kind. It is definitely in the manner of Russel Wright, but others were also working with aluminum in this evolutionary and historic period of modern design. It is in fine vintage condition. It has age wear to the aluminum, including age-related scratches and rubs. More so to the reflector shade which is handled more and less on the cone and base. A large switch on the cord turns the lamp on or off. A swivel permits the shade to be adjusted into a number of positions to direct and reflect light to either side of the lamp. This rare lamp is a design tour de force! It is simply BEAUTIFUL and flatters any style decor with its timeless good design. An incredible addition to your New York penthouse, Palm Springs atomic ranch or West Palm Beach estate!
