About the Item
An exquisite set of four French Louis XVI style gilt bronze and rock crystal candelabras by Bagues. Each piece is structured with a central gilt bronze stem rising from a shaped base with scroll-form supports. The arms branch outward in tiers, curving to support multiple candle sockets, each fitted with rock crystal bobeches. The overall form is vertical and tiered, crowned with a faceted rock crystal finial. The bronze is gilt, providing a warm golden surface that contrasts with the clarity of the crystal elements.
Decoration consists of numerous suspended rock crystal pendants in varied faceted shapes, including drops, prisms, and diamond forms. These pendants are arranged in cascades across the arms and central structure. Interspersed among them are floral motifs composed of small rock crystal beads set in petal formations, attached with gilt wire. The crystal is hand-cut, with facets of different shapes and depths, while the gilt bronze arms are restrained in form, allowing the crystals to dominate the ornamentation. The base is enriched with acanthus leaf details and scrolling ornament in keeping with the Louis XVI style.
Bagues, established in France in the mid-19th century, is renowned for its lighting and decorative objects in gilt bronze mounted with rock crystal and glass. The firm specialized in chandeliers, sconces, and candelabras, often reviving Louis XV and Louis XVI designs.
