About the Item

Two monumental or oversize studio ceramic table lamps by English potter Bernard Rooke. Beautiful statement pieces, in natural browns and earth tones with organic shaping and decorated with Rooke's own runic hieroglyphics. Not a pair, as each piece is hand-built and unique - with its own colours, tones and shape - however they are similar in design and work well together. The weight of the pieces suggests Rooke's work from the 1960s and, as we have seen with other early pieces, these two are unsigned. Both pieces are in good vintage condition, with occasional flaws in line with age, use and the making and firing process - including firing cracks, nicks, glaze losses, minor asymmetry and small knocks - see images for detail and overview. Original felt to the base, with cut-outs. Wiring: Rewired in the recent past and PAT tested for the UK. New E27 lamp-holders included. Shades: The lamps are shown here with a simple hessian shades, newly made, which attach through the ring on the lamp-holder. Approximate dimensions: Ceramic only: H 49cm 50cm W 17 cm at base D 12 cm at base Including shade (as shown in image 1): H 102 cm Dia 35 cm Bernard Rooke was born in 1938, and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1960 he set up a workshop in Forest Hill sharing with another pottery artist, Alan Wallwork. Rooke made progressive sculptural work and early pieces were hand-built using coils and blocks. His work is found in private collections as well as museums and galleries around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
