About the Item
Unique mid-century Organic Modern Danish stoneware lamp by Søholm Keramik, circa 1960s. The lamp has been fitted with a new socket and rewired with a jute-wrapped cord; it’s ready for use with a US plug, or can be adapted to your country’s electrical standard. It is paired with a new natural-toned pleated shade with a woven lattice pattern that complements the earth-toned glaze and verticality but also provides an interesting counterpoint to the lamp’s overall aesthetic. Listed height includes the lampshade.
A mid-century Danish stoneware table lamp from Søholm Keramik, one of Denmark's most celebrated ceramic manufacturers, founded in Rønne on the Baltic island of Bornholm in 1835 and active until 1996. This piece, model 3082/2, dates to circa 1960s–1970s and exemplifies the innovative glazing techniques that made Søholm internationally renowned among collectors of Scandinavian design.
The cylindrical bottle form features a distinctive collar rim with beautiful proportions that epitomize Danish modern sensibility. It has a unique drip glaze treatment creating organic vertical striations that cascade from shoulder to body. The glaze is applied over a textured, speckled sand-colored stoneware body . This painterly, free-flowing glaze technique became a hallmark of Søholm's artistic output during the 1960s and 1970s.
The lamp is attributed to designer Svend Aage Jensen, who was celebrated as a master of glazes and worked extensively for Søholm during the 1950s through 1970s. Jensen collaborated with form designer Holm Sørensen on many modernist Søholm series beginning in 1956, creating pieces that combined sculptural forms with Jensen's innovative glaze treatments. The earthy brown, amber, and golden tones combined with the organic drip pattern are characteristic of Jensen's aesthetic and the broader Danish studio pottery movement of the period.
The base is fully marked with the impressed circular stamp reading "BORNHOLMSK SØHOLM DENMARK STENTØJ " (stentøj meaning stoneware in Danish) and retains its original paper label indicating "TYPE: 3082/2" as well.
