About the Item
The Super lamp by the designer Martine Bedin can be dragged along like a dog on a leash (with an arched back resembling a stegosaurus), embodying the playful spirit of Memphis. It is made with a semicircle in lacquered fiberglass resting on four rubber wheels. Six colored cylinders contain the sockets for the bulbs. The light bulbs themselves are part of the image of the lamp.
Martine Bedin is a French architect and designer, best known as a founding member of the Memphis Group, the radical Italian design collective established in 1981. Her work is characterized by bold colors, geometric shapes, and playful, unconventional forms that challenged traditional design norms. One of her most iconic creations is the “Super Lamp,” a colorful, mobile lamp resembling a toy car, which became a symbol of postmodern design. Bedin studied architecture in Paris and Florence, and her cross-cultural background influenced her eclectic style. Beyond Memphis, she has worked in architecture, furniture, lighting, and graphic design, often blending artistic expression with functional objects. Her work remains influential in contemporary design, celebrated for its creativity, optimism, and defiance of minimalist trends that dominated the late 20th century.

Martine Bedin's (b.1957) contributions to Memphis were primarily in the area of lighting and graphic design. Born and raised in Bordeaux, Bedin moved to Florence in 1978 to study architecture with Adolfo Natalini of Superstudio. In 1979 she contributed an installation entitled La Casa Decorata to the Milan Furniture fair and she met Ettore Sottsass Jr. the following year, leading to an invitation to join Memphis. Among Bedin's contributions to Memphis in its first year ‘1981’ was this iconic Super lamp.
