About the Item

A very large - 55cm! - and very rare table lamp with handles, constructed in a "water foam" design, by Marius Giuge. The piece is extremely decorative and the enamel has kept all of its shine and quality. The white color is dotted with black and brown alveoli that contrast with the clear enamel. The technique used to achieve this effect was to add chemical compounds to the enamel. Depending on the chosen dosage, this created variations in the size and depth of the craters. This decoration, invented by Marius Giuge, inspired the "Fat Lava" ceramics, very popular in Germany in the late 1960s and 1970s. An iconic example of Marius Giuge's production in the 1960s and 1970s, it is signed on the base as MG – VALLAURIS - AM for "Marius Giuge - Vallauris - Alpes Maritimes". Some small marks of use on the base but normal for an object this age. Otherwise in perfect condition. Marius Giuge, a key figure in Vallauris (1909-1980), lived through the post-war boom years with classic forms and glazes that bordered on kitsch. He inherited the expertise of his father, Philippe, who lived in Vallauris and learned the pottery trade from him. In 1947, he opened his own workshop. He initially worked on traditional products before converting to decorative ceramics. An excellent artisan potter, his workshops prospered. In the late 1960s, he developed his famous "water foam" decoration, created by adding chemicals to the glaze to create variations in the size and depth of the craters. This decoration, applied to large pieces with shapes inspired by Greek antiquities, is emblematic of his production. It was followed in West Germany by the industrialized factories of the post-war period, which in turn developed "Fat Lava." In 1975, Marius Giuge passed on his workshop to his daughter, also a ceramist, thus perpetuating a family tradition. Facing the consequences of the oil crisis, the workshop closed permanently in 1980 (the date of Marius Giuge's death).

Space Age Table Lamp in Chromed Metal att. to Gaetano Sciolari (1927-1994)
By Gaetano Sciolari
Located in MOUGINS, FR
Large "Space Age" style table lamp by Gaetano Sciolari in chromed metal. The lamp is on a mirrored chromed metal base, with 6 chromed metal spikes with bronze tops around a central shaft, giving the lamp a very elegant silhouette. It is equipped with its original lampshade (some signs of use - see photos). A typical creation by Sciolari in the 1970s - 1980s, this lamp is in excellent condition with particularly well-preserved chromed walls. The electrification is original and has been revised. Dimensions: Total height 75 cm, height excluding lampshade 44 cm, base diameter 17 cm. Lampshade 37.5 cm by 30 cm in diameter. Gaetano Sciolari (1927 – 1994) is a designer, architect and above all an outstanding businessman, born in Italy in 1927. After graduating from the Faculty of Architecture, the young man returned to his first passion, cinema, and in particular filmmaking. However, after the death of his father in 1949, Sciolari had no choice but to take over the family lighting production business. In just a few years, the designer transformed the company and propelled it onto the international scene. Sciolari was not only a brilliant business leader, he was also a creative, prolific and talented designer. He worked for the great names of design like Stilnovo in Italy in the 1950s, Boulanger and Stilkronen. Throughout his career, he designed beautiful and incredible lighting fixtures like the “Mod A5011” pendant (circa 1950), the “4079” floor lamp (1965) and of course the Cubic chandelier (1970s). His creations are shaped in both shiny and matte metal, multi-lights, evoking futuristic visions of the emerging space age. In the 70s and 80s, his creations are in high demand.
