White Padova Bocci lamp, 1970s

The Bocci lighting company brings a near-mystical element to its brilliant designs. Hand-blown glass orbs hover in colorful arrangements that magnify their luminance. The company’s sculptural work hangs delicately in a space, appearing to dance in the air.

Founded in 2005 by designer Omer Arbel and businessman Randy Bishop in Vancouver, Canada, the company opened with the Bocci 14 lighting series. Its inaugural designs were an immediate hit and continue to be in demand with collectors.

Bocci moved forward with several more series, each denoted by a numerical value to indicate the chronological order of its creation. Each series is wildly different from the others, from overfilled brass castings to blown glass fixtures in which every piece has a unique shape. The Bocci 28 lighting series won a Red Dot Design Award in 2012 for its arrays of perfectly-formed inverted orbs within larger glass globes.

From 2015 to 2020, the company operated Bocci 79, a showroom and archive housed in a former courthouse in Berlin that was built in 1896. With Arbel serving as creative director and Bishop managing the business end of the company, Bocci continues to produce marvelous works of lighting splendor out of Vancouver.
