Rare Chinese Kangxi Polychrome Coromandel Lacquer Casket
Located in Lymington, GB
A rare Chinese polychrome Coromandel or ‘Bantam Ware’ lacquer casket or table cabinet, Kangxi period (1661-1722). Circa 1700. This fine small Chinese-export lacquer fitted casket is decorated overall with polychrome incised decoration. Opening with two doors revealing a red interior with fitted drawers and a hinged rising top. In superb, almost entirely original condition, retaining its vivid colours and fine details with courtiers in a pavilion and on horseback amidst foliage and formal palace gardens. The small bun-type feet are historical replacements. Interestingly bearing an antique-script inventory #25 and A I on the base. Nb. Bantamwork or Coromandel lacquer, not to be confused with ‘japanning’, is the term applied to decoration that is cut into a layer of gesso and then lacquered in colours. Much of the lacquer was transhipped from China through Coromandel in India, or the Dutch colony Batavia, Java. References: Coromandel lacquer or 'Bantamwork', with its characteristic incised decoration, was made in Henan province in Northern China from the latter-part of the Ming dynasty and exported to Europe from the end of the 17th Century through the East India Company's and VOC trading posts on the Coromandel Coast of India. The technique consisted in overlaying a base of wood with a series of increasingly fine white clays and fibrous grasses. Over this surface, lacquer was applied and polished before the design was incised and the hollowed out portions filled with colour and gilt and finished with a clear lacquer to protect it. Although John Stalker and George Parker used the term 'Bantamwork', the contemporary layman usually called it 'cutt-work', 'cutt Japan' or 'hollow burnt Japan'. Stalker and Parker discuss two types of 'Bantam-work' - flat and incised - in their 'Treatise on Japanning and Varnishing' (1688), noting that it 'was done in colors mix't with a gum water'. They also considered that it was 'almost obsolete, and out of fashion, out of use and neglected....' although admitted that 'it was very pretty, and some are more fond of it, and prefer it to the other...'. This casket/ table cabinet now on offer is related to one formerly with Malletts and illustrated in A. Bowett, 'English Furniture 1660-1714: From Charles II to Queen Anne' (2002) p. 150, plates 5:9. A much larger yet closely-related Bantam work coffer with rising lid was offered in the 'Asian Art in Cologne' sale lot 114 on 11th December 2021. Estimated @ £ 60,000 - £79,000. Mme de Pompadour, mistress to King Louis XV from 1745 to 1751, was an avid collector and admirer of Chinese Coromandel or Bantam Work, and was probably largely responsible for the very high prices recorded for such pieces, sometimes 10 times or more the price of ordinary furniture of equivalent quality. A Coromandel cabinet...

1750 Venezia Italy Lacquered Dark Blue Wooden Box with Golden Decoration
Located in Brescia, IT
This is a refined and exquisite lacquered wooden box, with polychrome and golden decoration on dark blue background. The dark blue color could seems a dark green. On the lid bright red and ivory volutes with lace inserts meticulously painted. Inside an exotic garden are depicting two Oriental human figures dressed in golden clothes. Band decorated with floral and volute motifs. It could be a magnificent jewelry case. One of the distinctive characteristics of Venetian Baroque and Rococo furniture and decorative objects is the skilful use of lacquers. Lacquer is a natural resin that was very rare in the past, imported from the East and used to create smooth and colored surfaces on furniture, ready to be finely decorated with refined floral designs or exotic animals. Venetian artisans became masters in lacquer processing which required time and patience because it was made with many steps. The Venetian style deeply influenced furniture design throughout Europe, but none reached the Venetian level in terms of beauty. The skillful use of lacquer and carvings defined Venice's unique style during the Rococo period, its Golden Age. Referring bibliography: A similar shaped and lacquered wooden box is presentin the Cà Rezzonico, in Venice and it is featured in S. Levy Lacche veneziane settecentesche II, Milano 1967, tav. 444. The piece is in excellent state of maintenance and it is guaranteed original in every parts. The surface was only cleaned not restored and it is original. The wooden dark blue lacquered box...

Austrian Turned Walnut Floor Lamp, circa 1915
Located in Kilmarnock, VA
A substantial and sculptural turned walnut floor lamp, crafted in the Biedermeier style, with a commanding 18-inch diameter base and beautifully executed proportions. The warm, highly figured walnut is expertly lathe-turned into a sweeping architectural form that references 19th-century European classicism while remaining strikingly modern in silhouette. Producing a turned piece of this scale—especially with such balance and clarity—would have required exceptional skill and specialized equipment, particularly during the early to mid-20th century when this lamp was likely produced. The sheer size of the base and the consistency of the turning across its full height suggest a level of craftsmanship often reserved for architectural columns or custom commissions. The result is a floor lamp that feels as much like a piece of sculpture as a functional object. The lamp is designed in the tradition of Biedermeier, the early 19th-century Central European style known for its simplicity, symmetry, and reverence for fine materials. Though pared down in ornament, this style was favored by intellectuals, artists, and aristocrats for its quiet elegance and timeless restraint. Originally sourced from David Duncan Antiques...

1750 Venezia Italy Green Light Blue Lacquered and Shaped Wooden Box with Flowers
Located in Brescia, IT
This is a refined lacquered and shaped wooden box, with polychrome Chinese figures and fine floral decoration on green and light blue background. The curved shape of the box, on the front, on the sides and of the feet, the rich carving, are the result of the high level craftemanships of the Venetian master cabinetery. This magnificent piece hails from the Mid-18th Century in Venezia and masterfully shows the lacquered Venetian style. Its carefully considered proportions, refined carvings, magnificent color of the lacquer, and premium materials culminate in this wooden box that shows sophistication and grace. This is a little jewel, a case to contain jewels. One of the distinctive characteristics of Venetian Baroque and Rococo furniture is the skilful use of lacquers. The iron little key is not working. Inside are visible some scribbles.
