Louis Christiaan Kalff (14 November 1897 in Amsterdam - 16 September 1976 in Waalre) was a Dutch designer. After graduating from secondary school, Kalff studied at the Quellinus School in Amsterdam (now the Gerrit Rietveld Academie) and at the Technical University of Delft.
Between 1925 and 1926, together with Jan Hanrath, Kalff designed the building of the Delft Student Rowing Association (D.S.R.V. Laga) in the style of the Amsterdam School.
In 1925, Kalff joined the Philips advertising department. Under his direction, the Lighting Advice Bureau (LIBU) was established in 1929. He designed the Philips logo and participated in the World Expositions in Barcelona, Antwerp, Brussels and Paris. He also designed posters and printed advertisements for the Holland-America Line, the Calvé company, the seaside resort of Scheveningen and Holland Radio. He also designed book covers.
Kalff also worked for Philips as an architect on buildings such as the Dr A.F. Philips Observatory in Eindhoven (1937), the Diamond Court in Valkenswaard (1948) and several country houses for Philips directors in Eindhoven and Waalre.

The vase is personally signed by Douglas Ferguson on the bottom with his name and "Pigeon Forge Pottery Tenn".
The Crater glaze has become one of the most recognizable glazes made by the Pigeon Forge Pottery. Often commonly referred to as "Volcanic" or "Lava" glaze, the Crater glaze was developed and made in several colors. We are offering a vase and 4 more bowls in different shapes by Douglas Ferguson, done in variations of Crater glazes, in separate listings.
Douglas Ferguson (1912-1999) was an established Tennessee pottery artist; he received a degree in Art Design Studies from Mars Hill College and worked in the Ceramic Research Laboratory for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Norris, TN, from 1935 to 1947, where he experimented with local clays. In 1946 he started Pigeon Forge Pottery in an old tobacco barn with his wife Ruth and Ernest Wilson, his colleague at the Ceramic Research Laboratory. He formulated many of his own glazes, including crystalline and Crater glaze.
In 1957 he created the Clingman Dome tea set, named by Ferguson for the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains, which the state of Tennessee presented to Queen Elizabeth. Ferguson became a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in 1948 and remained active until 1998, receiving Life Membership in 1991. He earned two awards from the Tennessee Arts and Crafts Festival in Nashville, received the Rotary Certificate of Distinguished Service, and was featured in books on Appalachian...

Leah "Lee" Levy (1922 - 2011) was an established pottery artist based in Upstate New York area. She was born in Pinsk, formerly in Poland, now in Belarus, and moved to the United States in 1929, growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts. She and her husband Irving started their first pottery studio in Long Island, New York, in late 1940s, while training at the Alfred University School of Ceramics alongside with some of the foremost artists and craftsman in America. Since 1946, Alfred University in Alfred, New York was a home for School for American Craftsmen, with the faculty that included Edwin Blanchard Brown, Ernest Frank Brace, Laurits Eichner, Philip Morton, Charles Reese, Ethel Mitchell, Robert Savage, Thomas Mclure, and most importantly for Levy, the renowned ceramists Linn Phelan and Herbert Sanders...

Glen Lukens Signed Early Midcentury Glazed California Pottery Weed Pot Vase

A very rare early work featuring a dark chocolate brown glaze by master Mid-Century Modern ceramist/potter Glen Lukens whose work has become quite collectible and relatively scarce and difficult to find.
The work is signed and dated (1924) by Lukens on the underside (we have only seen one other piece dated this early and that piece is in the Forrest Merrill Collection).
Lukens was the founder of the University of Southern California (USC) Architectural School’s Ceramics Department where he helped establish and promote clay pottery as a universally acceptable art form. The current popularity of Studio Pottery and ceramics is widely accepted to have started with Lukens who is oft credited with being one of the first artists to raise the stature of Mid-Century Modern Studio Pottery within the art world.
Lukens is famed for his experiments with various glazes and glazing techniques. His influence and glazes can be clearly seen in the works of Otto and Gertrud Natzler, Beatrice Wood, James Lovera, etc. He was also known for combining bright, colorful textile glazes (using natural, organic materials and elements he found in the Mojave Desert, Palm Springs, and Death Valley to make what he referred to as "California Colors") with the rough and raw clay surfaces of his often rudimentary forms and vessels.
Lukens currently has an award in his name (Glen Lukens Award) at the University of Southern California's School of fine Arts.
