This is a truly exceptional antique English Edwardian mahogany and satinwood marquetry oval two tier 'etagere', in the manner of Edwards & Roberts, circa 1890 in date. Crafted from the best flame mahogany, note the wonderful grain to the wood and the beautifully inlaid decoration with musical trophies within scrolling foliage and kingwood crossbanding. Masterfully inlaid with Sheraton influences, this etagere has an elegant refined look. The removable glass bottomed tray can be used to serve drinks, etc. It is raised on elegant square section tapering outswept legs with a shaped cross stretcher. The craftsmanship and finish are second to none. THE BOTANICAL NAME FOR THE MAHOGANY THAT THIS ITEM IS MADE OF IS SWIETENIA MACROPHYLLA AND THIS TYPE OF MAHOGANY IS NOT SUBJECT TO CITES REGULATION AND DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY RESTRICTED MATERIALS. Condition: In excellent condition having been beautifully cleaned and waxed in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 84 x Width 89 x Depth 55 Dimensions in inches: Height 33.1 x Width 35.0 x Depth 21.7 Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By the 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. Edwards & Roberts specialised in marquetry, inlay and ormolu. Marquetry is decorative artistry where pieces of material (such as wood, pewter, or brass silver) of different colours are inserted into surface wood veneer to form intricate patterns such as scrolls or flowers. The technique of veneered marquetry had its inspiration in 16th century Florence. Marquetry elaborated upon Florentine techniques of inlaying solid marble slabs with designs formed of fitted marbles, jaspers and semi-precious stones. This work, called opere di commessi, has medieval parallels in Central Italian "Cosmati"-work of inlaid marble floors, altars and columns. The technique is known in English as pietra dura, for the "hardstones" used: onyx, jasper, cornelian, lapis lazuli and colored marbles. In Florence, the Chapel of the Medici at San Lorenzo is completely covered in a colored marble facing using this demanding jig-sawn technique. Techniques of wood marquetry were developed in Antwerp and other Flemish centers of luxury cabinet-making during the early 16th century. The craft was imported full-blown to France after the mid-seventeenth century, to create furniture of unprecedented luxury being made at the royal manufactory of the Gobelins, charged with providing furnishings to decorate Versailles and the other royal residences of Louis XIV. Early masters of French marquetry were the Fleming Pierre Golle and his son-in-law, André-Charles Boulle, who founded a dynasty of royal and Parisian cabinet-makers (ébénistes) and gave his name to a technique of marquetry employing brass with pewter in arabesque or intricately foliate designs. Etagère is a piece of light furniture which was extensively made in France during the latter part of the 18th century. It consists of a series of stages or shelves for the reception of ornaments or other small articles. Like the what-not it was very often cornerwise in shape, and the best Louis XVI examples in exotic woods are exceedingly graceful and elegant. In modern usage, an étagère is often used to refer specifically to a long-legged shelf unit that fits over a bathroom toilet...

The central panel’s inlaid guitar and sheet music bring an air of sophistication and romance, while the surrounding floral marquetry adds depth and vibrancy to the design. The drawers are fitted with gilt-bronze pulls and escutcheons, further enhancing the luxurious presentation. Ideal for a living room, entryway, or master suite, this inlaid French commode...

Early 19th Century American Sheraton Tilt-Top Table of Neat Proportions
Located in Dallas, TX
PRESENTING a GORGEOUS Early 19C American Sheraton Tilt top Table of very desirable neat proportions. Made in America, possibly New York or New England, circa 1800. Made of Walnut, cherrywood and satinwood. The table is diamond in shape and the turned tripod base and feet appear to be made of walnut. The feet have beautifully simple, pointed toe feet …. ‘classic’ examples of ‘period’ American side tables of this Era! The square platform, attaching to the top to the base, has a brass catch/latch insert, with a ‘period’ brass button clasp on the underside of the table top, for the tilting mechanism. The square table top, itself, appears to be mainly cherry wood for the central square section, which in turn is then encased in a walnut square border and edged with a beautifully patinated striped satinwood. The central diamond on the table top is likewise a striped/burl satinwood of very high quality, edged with boxwood. There is a visible crack on the top and it appears that at some stage in its history, someone turned the table top 90 degrees, so that the baton supports underneath would support the weakened section with the crack. We have no doubt, however, that the top is original to the base and not a ‘marriage’, as the line (as one can see in the photos) on the base of the top where the batons were previously located perfectly matches the existing batons. The table is very ‘stable’ but the top (once locked in the down position) has a very slight lean towards the repaired cracked section. This is not significant and does not detract from the beauty and utility of this piece. We have, however, reflected these repairs, etc. in our pricing. It is also obvious, that the table was ‘always’ diamond shaped. It is the use of the cherry and walnut, coupled with the toe feet, that tells us, that this is ‘unmistakably’ an American Sheraton piece. Provenance: From an Outstanding Private Dallas Collection. Condition: Very good. See the full listing (above) for more detail on minor defects. Dimensions: 26.75 inches tall with top down, The table top is 17.2 inches x 17.8 inches With the top tilted it is 39.25 inches Tall and has a depth/width at the feet of 19.75 inches. Sheraton is a late 18th century neoclassical English furniture...

Pair of Late 19th Century Demilune Side or Console Tables in Neoclassical Style
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A Fine Pair of Late 19th Century Demilune Satinwood and Inlaid Side or Console Tables in the Neoclassical Style Attributed to Edwards and Roberts This fine pair of neoclassical-style tables are of demilune, or semicircular, shape and veneered principally in satinwood. Large-scale panels of satinwood have been laid on the carcass of the frieze to give a segmented effect, which is very attractive. The tapering square-sectioned legs and contrasting spade toes are all classic Sheraton design features, being reused here a century later. The most impressive parts of the tables are undoubtedly the beautiful tops, with the central feature being an inlaid fan-shaped patera, centered by a smaller example of the same form with additional penwork foliage on it. This, in turn, centers on a semicircular feathered boss. Around the edge of the tabletops is a wide crossbanding upon which a repeating neoclassical design featuring penwork scrolling foliage and urns is delicately executed and highly attractive. Footnote: The quality of the present tables indicates that they would have been produced in one of the leading workshops of the period. On stylistic grounds, the most likely maker is Edwards and Roberts. Particularly adept at producing furniture in the inlaid Sheraton style, the firm had an elite clientele and, as such, was able to make the finest furniture without cutting corners. For an example of a Carlton House table...
