About the Item

Antique Carved Dragon Mirror, Late 19th Century. An extraordinary rectangular mirror wrapped in the coils of a carved wooden dragon. The creature’s head projects from the top corner, its beak open and mane sweeping back in bold relief. Traces of original gilding highlight the eyes and beak, while the dragon’s claws and tail appear to grip the frame, ending in paw-like feet. The dark-stained wood shows a rich patina and age-appropriate wear. Likely French or Black Forest, circa 1880–1900, it’s a dramatic and imaginative piece that captures the spirit of the late Romantic era. Because of the subject matter and the great quality, we believe this antique mirror may be attributed to the master sculptor Gabriel Viardot.
