About the Item

This exceptional monumental French mirror, executed in repoussé bronze with gilt highlights, exemplifies the grand decorative ambitions of late 19th-century French metalwork. Rising to over 95 inches in height, the mirror is conceived as an architectural object, richly ornamented with maritime and classical motifs drawn from historicist and Beaux-Arts design traditions. The arched crest is crowned by a galleon under full sail, flanked by dynamic hippocamps (mythical sea horses) emerging from stylized waves, all set against a finely gilt stippled ground that heightens depth and contrast. Below, the rectangular mirror plate is framed by standing classical maidens, their elongated forms integrated into scrolling foliate ornament. The composition terminates at the base with a bold maritime trophy, reinforcing the nautical theme and lending visual weight and balance. The repoussé work is notable for its strong relief, fluid modeling, and textural variety, combining dark patinated bronze with warm gilded surfaces. The scale and iconography suggest the mirror was originally intended for a grand interior—such as a hôtel particulier, seaside villa, or formal salon—where maritime symbolism conveyed power, exploration, and national pride. Materials Technique: Repoussé bronze with applied gilding Carved wood backing and structure Original mirror plate (with minor losses) Dimensions: Height: 95.5 in. Width: 61.5 in. Condition: Fair condition, consistent with age and scale. Separation to bronze sheets at the lower right of the frame and separation from the frame along the left edge.
