About the Item

This is a wooden full-length mirror crafted in Japan during the Showa era. Following the Meiji era, when new Western culture began to permeate Japan, Japanese lifestyles underwent major changes. Full-length mirrors were born as part of this process. During the Edo period, there were vanity mirrors for women to apply powder and makeup, but they were small and compact, designed for use while seated. Large full-length mirrors like these were virtually nonexistent, and with the influx of Western culture, they gradually became more common from the Meiji to Taisho periods. Domestic glass mirrors advanced during the Meiji period, and diverse designs emerged during the Showa era. This beautiful piece, even among Showa-era examples, is a striking example of a piece that retains a strong Japanese aesthetic. The first thing that catches your eye is the softly curved frame and the rich grain of the mulberry veneer that covers the entire piece. The ripple-like grain characteristic of mulberry wood continues from the legs to the wainscoting, revealing the profound expression only natural materials can offer. The wood grain itself functions as decoration, giving the piece a presence reminiscent of a work of art. The base and the internal structure of the frame appear to be made of beech. The design of the legs is also noteworthy. They curve in a way that evokes the "warping" seen in Japanese furniture, creating an exquisite balance between Japanese and Western styles. This Japanese-inspired design gives the entire stand mirror an elegant and tranquil presence, blending naturally into Western-style rooms, Japanese-style rooms, and modern spaces alike. The functionality is also evident in the careful craftsmanship. The angle of the mirror can be adjusted by loosening the small metal knobs on both sides, allowing even taller people to comfortably reflect their entire bodies. The mirror is beveled, with a slight tapered cut around the edges, creating a beautiful finish that creates a subtle decorative effect when light hits it. This piece perfectly combines practicality and design, typical of Showa-era furniture. The condition is very good, with no major defects in the frame. The legs are supported by thin wood, so they will move back and forth to a certain extent when swayed by hand. However, as they are generally left alone and not touched or moved, they will remain stable and stand upright without any issues. As you can see from the images, there are small scuffs and scratches on the wood and slight stains on the mirror surface due to age, but none of these affect usability and are in rather good condition for furniture of this era. The wood has developed a soft, subdued color over the years, which is the charm of antique furniture and is sure to be enjoyed as part of this piece's unique character. At a relatively slim 72cm wide and 39.2cm deep, this piece can be placed effortlessly in limited spaces such as bedrooms, entryways, and dressing rooms. While retaining the ambiance of Japanese furniture, it also complements modern spaces, blending in with a wide range of styles, from minimalist to modern Japanese, and simply placing it there will enhance the quality of the space. Even in Japan today, it's rare to find a piece of this design. This beautiful Showa-era full-length mirror will bring a quiet presence to your home. Don't miss this opportunity to own one! Japanese antique wooden storage shelf/ Early 20th century/Wooden cabinet
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
This is a vertical wooden storage cabinet made of Japanese cedar in the first half of the 20th century. Although it is unknown where it was used, its appearance oozes a beauty that transcends practical use. The rustic feel of the material and its quiet presence give it a nostalgic warmth not found in modern furniture. This piece is made entirely of solid Japanese cedar, and the simple and disciplined structure of the vertical cleats, especially on the doors, and the cedar planks passed horizontally and overlapping from the reverse side, bring a perfect balance and rhythm to the overall look of the piece. This kind of design reveals a uniquely Japanese sense of design. The deep candy-colored texture created by the aging process is a taste that only antique pieces can have. The subtle changes in color from suntanning and areas touched by the hand tell a quiet story of the passage of time. The doors are simple and close with small wooden stoppers, preserving the practicality and warmth of the past. The shelves are securely fastened and provide ample storage capacity. Books, clothes, daily necessities, and various other items can be beautifully organized. The backs and shelves are stained and worn from use, and there are also some holes repaired on the sides and small chips. In a modern living space, this shelf can be used as a shelf in a study, as an accent in a living room, or as a quiet corner of a room where one spends quiet time alone, bringing a sense of calmness and flavor to the entire space. These long, locker-like proportions of antique shelves...
