Italian 18th century Rococo archtop painted and gilded mirror. The frame is decorated with gold leaf c-scroll leaves and urns with a shell sculpted and carved molding. It has marbleized painted inlay with muted colors of blue, green, and gray with wine veining creating a marble effect.
The mirror is richly decorated with carved wood elements and a coordinating trim. These frame the central shelf corner of the carved urns which signify the possible use of an over mantel for a large room with high ceilings. The mirror has the original mercury mirror and is distressed due to age. The back of the mirror is also original.
This mirror was created in Italy during the Rococo era of the 18th century. Rococo style is characterized by elaborate ornamentation, asymmetrical values, and curved or serpentine lines as reflected in this mirror.

The crown of this large French painted mirror has a wonderfully hand-carved cartouche with the initials “CL” between a pair of facing C-scrolls. A shaped shield with a recessed scalloped shell crest encircles the monogram, with the lower scrolls of the shield slightly overhanging the original rectangular mirror.
Another carved element is the crinkled ribbon behind the monogram that extends along the top of the frame, finishing just short of the rounded upper corners. There is a thick quarter round molding that is embellished with repeating C-scrolls infilled with shells. This central molding has been placed in between three layers of cavetto molding, with one to the outside and two more interior. The bottom of the frame has a thick molding adorned with volutes and partial roundels that flank a volute leaf carving, that also obscures part of the mirror.
