About the Item
This antique mantel mirror was crafted in southern France in the mid-19th century. The mirror features quarter-round top corners, characteristic of the Louis Philippe style. Its frame is made of solid pine wood, smoothed with gesso. The mirror was further adorned with cast floral ornaments. The material of these ornaments indicates an early origin, containing ground cattle bones, hide glue, and lime. In the latter half of the 19th century, the ornaments were completely cast in lime. The mirror was partially gilded with leaf gold and partially gilded with powdered gold dissolved in clear lacquer. Beneath the leaf gold, a red base color was applied, intended to give the gold a warm glow. Presumably, the mirror has been repainted in the past and then cleaned, resulting in the powdered gold being almost completely disappeared and the leaf gold heavily faded. The mirror frame mostly retains its natural bone color with red patches containing remnants of gold. The mirror has a beautiful natural and warm appearance. The glass has been replaced in our workshop, and a pine backing has been added. The mirror is clean, without damage, and ready for use.
