About the Item

A refined Swedish Neoclassical pier mirror of elegant proportions, richly carved and gilded. The tall rectangular mirror plate is set within a finely molded frame, surmounted by an arched crest centered by a classical urn and flanked by opposing winged figures, emblematic of the Gustavian tradition. The carving is crisp yet restrained, reflecting the Scandinavian interpretation of French Neoclassicism. The frame is embellished with beaded and rope moldings and raised classical ornament, terminating in a decorative plinth with rosettes and scrolling detail. Retaining an antique mercury glass plate with desirable age-related foxing and subtle waviness. The original gilded surface presents a warm, time-softened patina. An architectural and highly decorative mirror, originally intended for placement between windows or doors, and equally striking as a focal point in both traditional and contemporary interiors. The fish scale carved frame holds two beveled mirror plates and the base features more floral designs and two female mascarons. Original plates. 75 1/2 x 29 inches. Reference: Speglar 1650-1850 by Torsten Sylven and Elsebeth Welander-Berggren (page 203, very similar design). Good Condition
