About the Item
A very attractive and decorative 19th century giltwood pier mirror of tall rectangular form, richly carved and retaining a bright water-gilt surface. The cresting features a classical urn overflowing with roses and oak leaves, flanked by open scrolls and profuse flowerheads. The frame is carved throughout with bead-and-reel, rope-twist, and foliate mouldings, with trailing roses descending down the sides.
The base is supported by boldly carved cabriole feet terminating in paw-form supports, united by a garland of carved flowers, all crisply executed. The mirror plate appears to be a later replacement, as is typical for examples of this period.
