About the Item
This splendid 19th century French mirror exudes opulence and grandeur, with a richly carved and gilded wooden frame showcasing the finest craftsmanship of the Napoleon III period. The crest is crowned with an elaborate openwork cartouche of scrolling acanthus leaves and floral motifs, perfectly balanced by the intricate foliate and shell detailing running along the entire frame.
The mirror glass is framed by an elegant beaded inner border and a secondary band of fine, low-relief foliate decoration, adding both depth and refinement. The original gilding, now softly mellowed by time, has developed a warm, lustrous patina that enhances its antique character.
The mercury glass plate displays beautiful signs of age, including gentle foxing and small speckles, which lend a romantic and authentic atmosphere to its reflection. The frame itself bears a few light surface accidents and wear consistent with age, most notably along the edges and in certain carved sections, yet these remain discreet and do not detract from its striking presence.
