About the Item
This tabletop mirror was crafted during the Taisho Era (1912–1926) from kaede (Japanese maple) and was used for many years in a traditional Japanese ryokan built in the same period. Its restrained design, free from excessive ornamentation, reflects the quiet practicality and refined sensibility of Taisho-era furnishings.
The mirror plate is original to the piece and shows clear signs of age. Unlike modern mirrors, the surface is not pristine: it displays gentle cloudiness, small black spots, and fine scratches that have developed naturally over time. These characteristics are inherent to antique mirror glass and are considered part of its historical character rather than flaws. The reflection remains functional, but the appearance is intentionally soft and atmospheric, not sharp or mirror-bright.
The wooden frame has aged beautifully, with a warm patina that speaks to long use and careful handling. This piece works well as a tabletop mirror for a bedroom or dressing area, or as a decorative object that adds a sense of history and quiet presence to an interior.
Condition Notes:
- Structure is sound and stable with no structural issues
- Wooden frame shows age-related wear including minor scratches, dents, and surface marks consistent with long-term use
- Mirror surface shows cloudiness, small black spots, and fine scratches typical of antique glass
- These imperfections are inherent to old mirror glass and reflect age rather than damage
- Overall condition remains suitable for practical use and display
Cleaned and disinfected with a non-toxic solution.
As an authentic Taisho-era piece, this mirror exhibits natural signs of age and use inherent to Japanese vintage furniture. Characteristics such as mirror clouding, small black spots, fine scratches in the glass, surface wear to the wood, and gentle aging are reflections of authenticity and history, not defects. Please review all photos carefully—condition details are visible in the images—and feel free to contact us with any questions before purchasing.
