About the Item

A rare antique Art Nouveau figural table top vanity lamp with the original hand beveled mirror by Georges Van der Straeten. The lamp features a graceful sculpture of a woman in the Art Nouveau style, which dates from the early 20th century. It has its original two art glass shades, made of amber colored glass, shaped like bunches of grapes. The base, mirror frame and figure are made of spelter with a hand painted, hand rubbed finish. The grape leaves and light cap leaves are bronze. This type of lamp was designed as a decorative accent rather than for task lighting. It is a piece of art and Art Nouveau at its finest. Georges van der Straeten (1856–1941) was a prominent Belgian sculptor best known for his elegant Art Nouveau and Belle Époque bronze busts and figures. His work typically depicts graceful, often playful, young Parisian women. Van Der Straeten showed at his first Paris Salon in 1885 and continued to show until 1912. He won many awards for his artwork including the silver medal at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris.
