About the Item

Many Neoclassical-style houses in 18th-century France would feature decorative mirrors positioned between two windows. These long and tall mirrors, which were called trumeau, often incorporated carved paneling or artwork above the glass. This Louis XVI-style musical trophy trumeau from the 1800s is a wonderful example of such a mirror. The 24 ¼ x 20 ¼ glass is positioned at the bottom of the trumeau and is surrounded by a border of beading. A row of chevrons filled with partial flowers separates the mirror and the wonderfully carved musical trophy that is also surrounded by beading. The large trophy consists of several musical instruments (a lyre, a lute, and a tambourine are clearly visible), accompanied by oak and olive sprigs, all bound by a crinkled ribbon bow. Ovals of bead and reel inside bundled husks surround the cartouche, with a quiver of arrows and a torch bound by olive branches above and a floral swag with tied bows below. Both the mirror and the cartouche are surrounded by borders of foliate tips inside egg and dart, with raised rosettes in each corner, encircled by beading. Our Louis XVI-style musical trophy mirror can be used in just about any room of the house, including an entry hall, bedroom, or even a bathroom.
