About the Item

Crafted in Spain circa 1670, this rare and dramatic mirror likely originated from a private chapel or ecclesiastical interior. The deeply molded octagonal frame features six exquisitely carved cherub heads arranged around the recessed mirror plate, interspersed with expressive high-relief corner sculptures depicting angels, griffins, grotesques, and eagles. Each figure is hand-carved in solid wood and retains its original polychrome and gilt finish, displaying beautiful timeworn patina and soft tonal contrast between deep green, gold, and natural wood hues. The mirror retains its original mercury glass backed by hand-planed wooden panels, showing scattered oxidation and light wear that add to its authentic 17th-century character. Exceptionally heavy and sculptural, this early Spanish piece embodies the Gothic and Baroque transition, where religious symbolism meets decorative artistry. In excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with visible signs of age on both glass and frame that enhance its historical presence.
