About the Item

An exquisite 18th-century gilt mirror exemplifies the pinnacle of neoclassical craftsmanship. Its intricately carved acanthus and floral pierced crest gracefully ascend above a rectangular molded frame adorned with layered floral motifs. Flanking the frame are elegant floral drops, while ornate scroll-carved feet provide a stable base. The original single-plate mercury glass remains intact, preserving its historic patina, faint foxing, and subtle imperfections that contribute to the piece’s enduring charm, authenticity, and clear provenance. In the visual arts, the European movement known as "neoclassicism" emerged after about 1765 as a reaction against the lingering Baroque and Rococo styles and as an effort to revive what was seen as the greater purity of Roman art. It also drew on a more generalized, idealized perception of Ancient Greek art and, to a lesser extent, on the Classicism of the 16th-century Renaissance. Italy’s principal centres for Neoclassical painting, sculpture and interior design included Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Genoa. Size: 66.25” H x 40.75” W C. 1770, Italy
