19th Century French Carved Wood Mirror with Cherub Crest
A highly decorative 19th century French mirror featuring an elaborately carved wood frame in a warm, timeworn patina. The crest is surmounted by two exquisitely carved winged cherubs reclining beside a central cartouche encircled by laurel wreaths and ribbon detailing, evoking neoclassical themes of victory and innocence. The mirror retains its original glass, beautifully aged with ghost-like foxing and distressing that enhances its antique character and authenticity.
The frame is shaped in a curvaceous, serpentine form typical of the Rococo Revival period, with delicate hand-carved motifs including shell and scroll embellishments along the lower edge. The wood has a rich, naturally aged finish with subtle remnants of original gesso or polychrome beneath the surface, lending depth and history to the piece.
