About the Item
This is an antique French mirror in the Louis-Philippe style, made around 1880.
The mirror has a pinewood frame, smoothly prepared with gesso. The raised outer moulding is painted to resemble burl walnut and enriched with a gilded floral décor in relief.
It retains its original silver-nitrate mercury-gilded mirror plate, which remains in very good condition considering its age. The back of the glass bears an atelier stamp reading St4.
The mirror plate shows a few minor age spots, with a small cluster grouped in the lower left section.
The mirror still has its original wooden backing.
In our atelier, the glass and back panel were carefully removed, and the entire piece was gently cleaned. A small repair was carried out in the upper left corner.
The mirror is now free of damage, solid, clean, and ready for use.
The Louis-Philippe style (circa 1830–1870) is known for its refined simplicity and understated elegance. The rounded upper corners and soft contours of the frame are typical for this period, when the rigid Empire aesthetic gave way to a warmer and more domestic form of classicism. Decoration remained tasteful and detailed, often featuring imitation wood finishes, gilded accents, and dark lacquered backgrounds.
This mirror perfectly reflects the spirit of late 19th-century France, a time when the growing middle class sought comfort and sophistication in their interiors. The piece embodies the transition between artisanal craftsmanship and early industrial precision – a hand-made object with balanced proportions and timeless charm.
