About the Item
This is a rare large gold leaf gilt mirror that was made in northern France in the late 19th century.
It features the upper rounded corners typical for the Louis Philippe style. The frame was enriched with a unique bow-knotted rope ending in tassels. The mirror has a very sleek and elegant appearance because of the clean stylized frame and intricate rope. The mirror was completely gold leaf gilt and patinated. The gold leaf was not to a very high degree. The more gold leaf is polished, the more smooth the surface gets and a metallic gloss appears. In this mirror frame, the gold has a more matte appearance than usual. By using patina, the ornaments gained definition and gold warmth.
The glass was renewed by a thick mirror plate and a period pine back cladding was added.
The mirror is in good antique condition, clean, without damage, and ready for use.

- Condition:Repaired: Small repairs to the most elevated part of the frame on the lower left side. Wear consistent with age and use. The piece was completely gently cleaned and a new mirror plate was inserted. The glass is spotless and the piece is ready for use.
