About the Item
This is a fine 19th-century French Louis Philippe mirror, crafted in wood, smoothly finished with gesso and richly gilded with gold leaf. The frame displays the characteristic soft, rounded contours of the Louis Philippe period, reflecting the restrained elegance and balanced proportions typical of the era.
The original gilding shows a beautiful, natural aging. In several areas the gold leaf has softened and faded, with the warm red ground visible in places. This traditional red bole layer beneath the gilding adds depth and creates a warm glow that subtly shines through the surface. The wear has resulted in a nuanced palette of gold and red tones and a rich, authentic patina.
On the highest, slightly raised section of the frame, delicate floral engraving has been applied, understated yet refined, breaking the surface and catching the light in a gentle way. Along the inner edge, directly surrounding the glass, runs an elegant beaded molding, adding depth and a classical framing to the mirror.
The mirror retains its original mercury/silver-nitrate glass, which shows clear signs of age in the form of natural oxidation of the silvering, light haze, and localized craquelure. This produces a soft, slightly irregular reflection with subtle tonal variations, highly appreciated by collectors and perfectly in keeping with the character of a 19th-century mirror.
Altogether, this is a highly decorative and characterful Louis Philippe mirror that will serve as a strong and atmospheric focal piece in both classic and contemporary interiors.
