About the Item
On offer here is a beautiful antique gold leaf gilt oval mirror that was made in France in the late 19th century. The mirror has a solid pine oval frame smoothened with gesso and decorated with ornaments throughout. The crest at the top features a central scallop shell flanked by scrolls, acanthus, and by flowers and leaves. A similar yet smaller ornament was placed at the bottom. The most elevated part shows a typical gadrooned mold depicting a ribbon interlaced with acanthus. A classic pearl beading surrounds the glass. The whole mirror frame is gold leaf gilt, patinated, and partially polished. The most elevated smooth surface of the frame itself was polished to a higher degree than the surrounding parts. By polishing, the gold obtained more gloss and became thinner. It shows the sharp lines in the gold where the gold leafs overlapped. The mirror has its original silver nitrate-silvered and facetted glass plate. The mirror plate is protected by the original pine back cladding.
The mirror plate was removed from the frame and over 150 years of dust was removed. In a picture provided in the listing the gathered dust is shown. Minor restorations to the ornaments on the top and bottom crest were done and the gold was gently buffed.
The mirror has an exceptionally strong gold color with only a little wear of the gold. The piece is clean, solid, and ready for use.
