About the Item
This is a refined French oval mirror, crafted in wood and silver-leaf gilded. The frame is clean and restrained in design, with a pure oval form and subtly molded edges. This understated aesthetic is characteristic of the late Louis Philippe and early Napoleon III period, when balance, sobriety, and refined simplicity were central. Stylistically, the mirror relates to the sober neoclassical tradition of the mid-19th century and can be dated to the second half of the 19th century.
The gilding was executed using a traditional technique in which silver leaf was toned with a yellow wax, giving the surface a soft “pale gold” appearance. Beneath the silver lies a dark anthracite-colored ground layer, intentionally applied to enhance depth and enrich the warm tone of the metal. This method was used more frequently in northeastern France and gives the frame a distinctive, slightly cool-warm glow and a refined visual depth.
Over time, the surface has developed a beautiful natural patina, with subtle color variations, light oxidation, and small irregularities, resulting in a lively and authentic appearance.
The mirror retains its original silver-nitrate glass and shows clear signs of age in the form of various spots and natural oxidation of the silvering, as visible in the photographs. These features create a soft, slightly uneven reflection that is highly characteristic of antique glass and especially appreciated by collectors.
The original pine back was removed in our workshop and the glass was taken out of the frame. The entire piece was carefully cleaned before being reassembled. The mirror is now clean, free of damage, and ready for use.
Altogether, this is a charming and stylish French mirror with a restrained form, a distinctive regional gilding technique, and a rich, authentic patina—an elegant accent for both classic and contemporary interiors.
