About the Item
This is truly magnificent gold-leaf gilded French Louis Philippe mirror, made in 1876 and bearing its original stamp on the back of the glass. The stamp refers to the Procédé Lenoir, a high-quality French mercury-silvering method that was developed and used in Paris during the 19th century. The glass was treated using the traditional mercury-tinning technique (étainage au mercure), a process known for producing a bright, crisp reflection and an exceptionally durable mirrored surface. Mirrors carrying this stamp are typically of distinguished quality and are recognized for the rich, authentic glow that has survived remarkably well over time.
The mirror displays the classic features of the Louis Philippe style: a strong, rounded profile with a finely engraved Greek-key motif on the uppermost section, framed by a delicate beaded border that elegantly surrounds the glass. The frame is crafted from pine and finished with multiple layers of gesso and a traditional red-clay foundation known as the bolus layer. This bolus subtly shines through the gold leaf, giving the gilding its warm depth and characteristic richness. The mirror is entirely gilded in gold leaf and then hand-polished, resulting in a soft, refined sheen of high quality. Despite its age of nearly 150 years, the gilding remains in remarkably fine condition.
At some point during its long lifetime, a small repair was made to the lower left side of the frame. We have chosen to leave this repair as it is, since it adds to the authentic character and visible history of the piece. In our atelier, the original backboard was carefully removed and the glass was taken out of the frame. Both the frame and the glass were professionally and gently cleaned, removing a century and a half of accumulated dust without disturbing the historical surfaces.
The mirror is now clean, solid, stable, and ready for use—an elegant and fully authentic 19th-century piece that beautifully unites the refined Louis Philippe aesthetic with the craftsmanship and quality of the Parisian Lenoir silvering process.
