About the Item

This small French Louis Philippe mirror embodies the understated elegance of the mid-19th century. The frame features the characteristic softly arched top that is so typical of the Louis Philippe style, a period that developed roughly between 1830 and 1850. During this time, the exuberant language of the late Empire gave way to calmer proportions, flowing lines, and a more domestic, refined aesthetic. Mirrors from this period were designed to bring harmony into the interior, not to dominate, but to add light, space, and warmth to salons, bedrooms, and reception rooms. The frame is made of pinewood, traditionally constructed, then carefully smoothed with a gesso ground and subsequently hand-decorated with a deep, warm faux wood finish. The outer edge displays a refined brown wood-grain imitation, while the central frieze is richly painted in a burl rosewood effect, creating a lively, almost marbled surface. This type of decorative painting technique was highly appreciated in the 19th century, allowing workshops to evoke the luxurious appearance of costly exotic woods while keeping the object technically stable, lighter in weight, and practical for everyday use. The original mirror plate is authentic silver-nitrate glass, as produced in the 19th century. It shows gentle, age-related wear with light foxing and a soft copper-toned translucency—traces that testify to its age and authenticity without significantly disturbing the reflection. In our workshop, the glass was carefully removed from the frame, the entire piece gently cleaned, and then professionally reinstalled. The mirror is clean, free from defects, and fully ready for use. The original pinewood back has been preserved, contributing to the historical integrity of the piece. In the interiors of its time, a mirror such as this served both a functional and decorative role. It would have been hung above a commode, dressing table, or mantelpiece, where it not only served for reflection but, more importantly, to capture and disperse daylight and candlelight. In the Louis Philippe period, mirrors played a key role in visually enlarging rooms and softening interiors that were increasingly focused on comfort, intimacy, and bourgeois elegance. Finally, it is important to note that the rosewood appearance of this mirror is entirely the result of decorative painting. The frame features a burl rosewood faux finish and is therefore not made of solid or veneered rosewood. As a result, the mirror contains no CITES-regulated materials and can be shipped cross-border without restrictions.
